February returns saw only 20 fish weighed in to the federation so hard going at the moment. It gets worse, only 17 fish recorded in the Federation for March. Saying that April has seen a decent Pollack of 7lb 4oz from the shore for Rob Whipp. A few decent Mackerel showing at the normal south coast marks, best is a nice fish of 2lb 2oz for Ashley Bruce, another of 1lb 12oz for Tim Evans. Boat Angling News
Dave Trebiblcock, skipper of Che Sara sara out of Newquay, has been finding some good fish recently. Bob Pollard landed a new calculation Smoothhound of 24lb 4oz and a couple of days later Kevin Lenderyou caught his first ever Hound, a nice fish of 20lb 14oz. During the same trip a few Huss were caught best going 15lb 10oz for Steve Penrose. Jon Ball has landed a cracking Spotted Ray of 6lb 5oz 12dr. Jon kept the fish alive and returned after weighing on dry land. This calm spell of weather saw a few keen anglers make a 50 mile trip to fish a mid channel wreck aboard Mystique II skippered by Dave Bond. A few Ling and Pollack were caught on the drift but nothing of any great size so it was time to put the anchor in for eels. It was not long before they really started to show in numbers, small fish to start with to 35lb but as the tide started to slow the bigger fish came on the feed. Best eel was 72lb for Mike Ivey but Bob Pollard landed a nice fish of 56lb and Adrian Hill one of 61lb. Small Eyes are showing on the northcoast also, not big fish but a few in the 9lb + size. This hot weather is prime Weaver fishing, this was confirmed by fish of 1lb 9oz 4dr for Mike Ivey, Jon Ball had one of 1lb 6oz and Adrian Hill landed a new Truro record fish with one of 2lb 0oz 14dr which took a large live launce. Chippie Chapman has smashed the CFSA Blue Shark Record (calculated) with a fine fish of 162lb 7oz 4dr. This fish was landed on 12lb class rod using 20lb line. Ian and Mark Bidgood are catching a few nice fish. Ian landed a nice Whiting of 4lb while Mark landed a Spotted Ray of 5lb 2oz and a Thornie of 8lb during the same session. During a private boat session off the North Coast by Graham 'River Dance' Browning and Adrian Hill some good specimen Ray and Huss were caught. Best Ray went 10lb 15oz for Graham, he also caught Huss to 13lb 4oz and a 30lb 9oz Tope. The Tope was returned after measuring and both Huss and Ray were kept alive weighed on dry land and returned unharmed. A special mention must go to Bob Woodman who landed a Blue Shark of 102lb single handed from his own boat out of Looe. Nice to see a few Small Eyed Ray from the North Coast, two private boats catching 15 or so with two doubles by Graham Browning best going 10lb 9oz and a few between 9-10lb. Where are the mackerel on the North Coast? At the moment it's a real struggle to catch enough for bait yet there are plenty off Falmouth. Could this be having some effect on the current poor catches of Tope off Padstow? Where normally there should be plenty of pack Tope in the 15lb-20lb class there only seems to be the odd decent male fish showing. This weekend saw some fine fish being landed. Steve Holyear started it off with a John Dory over 3lb then bettered it a few days later with a cracker of 6lb 5oz 4dr. A Looe SAA charter produced some really nice fish, Jon Ball landed the best of the Huss a fish of 13lb 14oz, Bob Pollard landed a Blonde Ray of just under 14lb and best Triggerfish landed was 3lb 6oz by Adrian Hill. The odd Couchs Bream being landed down west, a non club member caught one of 4lb 12oz and I have heard of a couple more being landed over 3lb from the same area. Mounts Bay under 11 member Devon Thomas caught a conger of 23lb 9oz while James Fitzsimmons landed a nice Dab of 1lb 1oz. cath Elcocks landed two brill best going 4lb 8oz while out with Chippie Chapman. Graham brownimng landed a nice Tub just under 3lb. Bob Pollard looks like the man to beat this year, this weekend saw Bob land a PB Blue Shark of 135lb and he also weighed a Gar of 2lb 13oz. jeff Lee of Helston caught a decent Grey Gurnard og 1lb 1oz 4dr. Jon Ball landed a fine Black Bream of 4lb 1oz while fishing off the North Coast. Mounts Bay members are doing very well, junior member Kieren faisey landed a new 11-16 Record Blue Shark of 96lb 12oz. Robin Chapman has smashed the Megrim record with a cracker of 2lb 7oz 8dr, the old record had stood since 1969. This weekend saw some cracking fish being landed. Steve Carey had a 1lb 10oz 15dr Weaver and a lovely Brill of 4lb 10oz. John Tucker landed a 2lb 1oz Plaice and Jon Ball landed two Dorys best going just over 5lb. Bob Pollard landed a cracking Dory of 5lb 10oz which is his 9th different species over specimen weight, who is going to bet against him landing the 10th? A recent trip out from Newquay by TCSAC members saw a variety of quality fish landed, Cath Elcocks had the best Megrim of the day of 1lb 5oz and a cracking Tub just over 4lb. Best a a bunch of Greys was just under 1lb 2oz for Steve Penrose and Graham browning landed a Dory of just under 3lb. Steve Brannan of Raleigh landed a fine Bass of 11lb 1oz. To catch a fish over 150% is quite rare, so to catch 3 in one session and two at the same time!! Adrian Hill and Bob Pollard landed four John Dorys 5lb 9oz, 5lb 2oz, 4lb 8oz and 4lb. James Fitzsimmons of Helston landed a Dab of 1lb 8oz 8dr, another 150%+ fish for September.

Shore One Day weights for Red Gurnard and Thin Lipped Mullet.
These weights should be 0.13.0 (0.369kg) and 2.2.0 (0.964kg) respectively. Some lists sent out might contain incorrect weights for these two species.
Smoothhound calculation method
Please remember that The CFSA accept the calculation method for smoothhound. Try and take a tape measure with you and take the girth and tip of the nose to the fork of the tail. Calculation is (in inches) girth x girth x length divided by 800. Provide a photograph where possible.
CFSA Gallery
If anyone has caught good fish and would like a photo published on the CFSA website please email me recorder@thecfsa.com Please give details of the weight. Please make sure that you have the parents approval when requesting a junior angler's photo to be published.
Important rule regarding Tope
Currently there is a total ban on the landing of Tope by both commercial fishermen and recreational anglers. Tope must be returned unharmed after capture but can be entered into the Federation using the calculation method.
